Rust is nothing more than iron oxide. When iron or an iron alloy is exposed to moisture and oxygen, a new compound is formed over time which is referred to as rust. Water is the main catalyst for this process although sodium will speed it up. Some items are more susceptible to rust. This is especially true of metal. The thinner the metal, the more like it is to develop iron oxide. Don’t despair though. There are ways to

If you need to know how to get rid of rust on clothing, the first thing to do is treat the rust stain immediately. This increases the chances of your successfully removing the stain. Don’t dry the garment until the rust is completely gone as heat will set the stain. Start by rubbing the stain with a lemon. Saturate the stain with the lemon juice and lay the garment out in the sun. This should be enough to remove the stain. Once it is gone, wash it as usual.
If rust has appeared on your vehicle, remove it with the help of a sanding wheel and rust acid compound. Before you work on the rust, tape off the surrounding area so you don’t damage your paint job. Put rubber gloves, a dust mask and safety glasses on, then sand the rusted area with a sanding wheel, following up with sandpaper. Once the area is smooth, use a thin layer of rust acid compound to remove any fine particles that remain. Prime and paint the sanded area within 24 hours and your repair is complete.
Vinegar works great on metals that have rusted. Pour vinegar into a glass and place small, rusted items in the glass. The rust will dissolve and you can wash it off. The same is true of bigger items although you will have to pour the vinegar directly onto the rust or apply it with a cloth. Once dissolved, remove the rust with a clean cloth. Your work is done.
