How to Get Rid of Clogged Drains

fixing clogged drainsDo you need to know how to get rid of clogged drains? There is nothing more frustrating than washing dishes or taking a shower only to find that your drain is stopped up. The first thing you will need to do when you have a drain that is stopped up is to determine where the clog is. If only one drain is acting up, this will be fairly easy. If not, you may have to find the blockage in a main drain which is more difficult, but something you can still handle.

With one drain, start by checking the stoppers and strainers. If you are lucky, this is where the problem lies. If not, next you will need to try to clean the drain with a plunger. Make sure to add water in the drain if there is none before using the plunger though as this adds to the suction. Petroleum jelly will also add to the suction so add a layer around the plunger rim. If this does not clear the drain, you still need to know how to get rid of clogged drains so move on to the trap.

Before accessing the trap, you must first drain any water in the pipe. Remove the clean out plug if there is one or remove the couplings that hold the trap. Wash the trap out to remove any debris and inspect it for corrosion or wear. Replace the trap and see if this corrected the problem. If not, you will need to use a snake to clear the drain as it is too far into the pipes. Push the snake through the drain until you encounter the blockage. Twist the snake clockwise until the clog is removed. If this doesn’t work, move on to a drain cleaner and follow the instructions carefully.

If all drains in the home are clogged, the main drain is the culprit. Determine where your clean out plug is and remove the cap. The snake must be used here along with your garden hose. Set the hose to a powerful stream to help break up the blockage. Once you have removed the clog, replace the cap with a new one for the best results. Now that you know how to get rid of clogged drains, you can save a fortune on a plumber and deal with less inconvenience when a drain does back up!
