Concrete is very strong and hardy which is why it is used in so many applications. There will be times though when you discover a chip and need to know how to get rid of chipped concrete. Often this is the result of something harder than the concrete being dropped on it. This may be heavy iron, steel or a number of other things. The first step is to determine how badly the concrete is damaged. For major repairs, it is best to call a professional in. If the damage is small though, you can repair it yourself quite easily. Here is what you need to do.
The first step in how to get rid of chipp
ed concrete is to remove any debris and loose materials. To ensure the repair is even, it is often best to chip away until you reach solid material. A ball-peen hammer and cold chisel are appropriate for this task. You will also need a broom or brush to clean up the loose debris. Once the area is cleaned, dampen it with water. This removes any tiny pieces of debris that remain. Don’t leave any standing water as this can lead to more problems.
Choose a concrete repair product. Mix the product as directed and use a trowel to spread it over the damaged area. Make sure you apply the product evenly. If you need to repair a crack, the mixture must be forced into it with pressure. When applying layers, wait a minimum of two hours between each layer for the best results. This is appropriate for small repairs.
How to get rid of concrete in larger areas requires a form, usually made of wood, to be used. The top of the form needs to be level with the adjoining concrete edges. For long areas, stakes must be placed approximately every four feet. If the area is short, duct tape may be used to secure it. To ensure the form won’t stick to the repair mix, coat the foam interior with cooking oil spray. Slightly overfill the form and smooth the form. Allow to dry overnight and remove the form. Your repair is complete.
